The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is facing the prospect of just a 25 car grid this year following the pre-season downsizing of the V8 Supercars field.
Twenty-five cars would be the lowest in the history of the race, which has run under a single set of technical regulations since 1995.
As reported this morning, a push has emerged to include a second class in this year’s race for Dunlop Series competitors.
The second-tier teams believe that adding a small contingent of the previous-generation cars would be a boost for the race, as well as helping build the profile of the Dunlop competition.

The move follows a lack of firm interest from V8 Supercars Championship teams in fielding Wildcard entries.

Dunlop teams have likewise baulked at leasing spare current specification V8 Supercars from main series teams on the grounds of cost, particularly in the case of an accident.
