The chase for the first official six second pass in Australian Pro Stock drag racing competition is on – with Dave Newcombe having recorded a 6.994 second quarter mile run at Willowbank Raceway this morning.
Newcombe’s pass – in testing for the resumption of the Castrol EDGE Winternationals this weekend – was the first pass ever seen in Australia under seven seconds.
With Newcombe’s time coming in testing rather than race conditions, it cannot be counted as an official national record, but that hasn’t fazed the Queenslander, who thinks it’s possible to repeat over the weekend.
“We’re very keen to record another pass under seven seconds this weekend, that is going to be our focus,” Newcombe told Speedcafe.com straight after the 6.994 run. “We’re very pleased with today’s time and it sets us up nicely for the weekend.”
The current national record sits at 7.033 seconds and it’s a time that Newcombe – one of the four Pro Stock drivers in with a shot at the National Championship win – is keen to smash this weekend.
At 313.5kph, Newcombe also bettered the current national speed record by one kilometre per hour.
The Willowbank Raceway surface couldn’t be in better condition leading into the resumption of the Castrol EDGE Winternationals – Jason Grima came very close to cracking the magic sixes with a run of 7.002 seconds earlier this morning.
The Castrol EDGE Winternationals was washed out on the June Long Weekend. It will resume from where it left off with the final two rounds of qualifying for all ANDRA Pro Series classes on Saturday, along with eliminations for all classes.
The event fires back into life this Friday, July 15 at Willowbank Raceway, Champions way Willowbank.
