A high-speed crash for Lewis Hamilton headlined an interrupted first day of Formula 1 testing at Jerez that saw just six cars set times.
Hamilton found the barriers at Turn 1 after suffering a front-wing failure on the main straight.
The crash put an early end to the day for Mercedes, which had been the first out the gate in the morning with its striking W05.
Team principal Paddy Lowe confirmed that the team intends to return to the track on Wednesday with an updated front-end.
“It is not a great way to go through our first day of testing, but we are working hard to recover,” he said.
“It is difficult to recover on day one when you don't have a lot of spare parts around us, but we intend to be out there tomorrow morning and we are working hard through the night to do that both here and in the UK.”
Kimi Raikkonen ended the day on top for Ferrari, eclipsing Hamilton's best by 0.7s with an hour remaining.
The Finn completed a class high of 31 laps throughout the day, despite it having started with the car grinding to a halt after five corners.
Valtteri Bottas was third fastest in the new Williams ahead of Sergio Perez (Force India), Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso) and Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber).
Sebastian Vettel and Marcus Ericsson took to the track in the Red Bull and Caterham respectively, but both failed to set flying laps.
The new McLaren remained in its garage for the entire day while the team solved electrical problems, while Marussia will not be seen until later in the week.
