The NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol is currently on-hold due to rain at the Tennessee half-mile track.
After showers delayed the start by 104 minutes, cars have been put under rain covers on the pit road at lap 124 of the scheduled 500 lap event. Bristol does have lighting and the race is expected to resume in the early evening. To be classified an event a minimum of 250 laps need to be completed.
Matt Kenseth was leading when the race was stopped ahead of Jamie McMurray, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Australia’s Marcos Ambrose has run as high as sixth and is now sitting 13th.
“Our car is good when the track is green, but lost a bit when the rubber went down,” said Ambrose.
“Certainly it will be green once again when we go racing and I feel confident that we can get a handle on it as the conditions change.”
Two drivers who have already had dramas are six-time champion Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano. Johnson was leading when he cut a front-right tyre and lost two laps to be sitting in 39th. Logano meanwhile has lost power-steering and only minor work had been allowed on his car before the red flag meant ‘tools down’ by all teams.
