Jamie Whincup has led a Red Bull Racing Australia front-row lock-out for Races 4 and 5 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Symmons Plains.
A 51.41s best from Whincup in the first of the two 10 minute sessions proved enough to edge out Lowndes by a scant 0.06s.
The Race 4 qualifying session was halted after less than four minutes when Nick Percat beached his HHA Holden at Turn 4.
Whincup had set the quickest time to date moments before the red flags flew and, after being eclipsed by Russell Ingall and then Lowndes following the resumption of play, responded with the eventual pole time in the dying seconds.
Ingall ended the session a sensational third from James Courtney, David Reynolds and Mark Winterbottom.
The second hit-out also saw Whincup set the early pace before being bumped by Lowndes.

The five-time champion’s Race 5 pole time of 51.14s subsequently proved 0.19s quicker than his team-mate had managed.
Mark Winterbottom and Scott McLaughlin will share the second-row for Race 5, despite the latter still struggling with the power steering problems encountered on the Volvos during practice.
Fabian Coulthard completed the top five, while Lee Holdsworth and Will Davison gave Erebus plenty to be optimistic about with sixth and seventh respectively.
The two 100km races will get underway at 1435 and 1635 local time.
