Mika Salo says he will return to the Armor All Gold Coast 600 in October looking to avenge the mishap that cost he and Will Davison a shot at winning Sunday’s race last year.
Having finished second to Jamie Whincup and Sebastien Bourdais on Saturday, Salo ran fourth in the first stint of the following day’s race when he suffered a puncture two laps shy of completing his minimum driving time.
Salo later watched Davison bring the car home 14th while the sister Ford Performance Racing Ford of Mark Winterbottom and Richard Lyons took the victory.
“I am really happy to be coming back to the Gold Coast to race with Will and FPR,” said Salo of re-signing with the factory Ford outfit.
“I have unfinished business as it was great to finish second last year but we were robbed of a win on the Sunday when we got a puncture.
“Will and the team are going really well so far this season so I am very confident we can again be at the front.
“The Gold Coast 600 is one of the best events I have done outside of Formula 1. It is a great mix of exciting racing, a good location and a good party. I can’t wait to come back in October.”
While no longer in full-time competition, the former Formula 1 driver has completed two rounds of the International Super Stars Series with the Swiss Maserati team this year, taking a best result of third during the most recent event at Spa.
Salo also competed as a guest driver in a round of Volkswagen’s Scirroco Cup R-Cup at Hockenheim in May, where he finished second.
Off-track, the Finn continues to work with local broadcaster MTV3 as a Formula 1 analyst, and undertook the role of FIA guest steward for June’s Canadian Grand Prix.
