Jamie Whincup has been handed a five-place grid penalty for today's race after making contact with James Moffat during qualifying at the Coates Hire Ipswich Super Sprint.
Whincup was the subject of a post-session investigation for an incident involving the Garry Rogers Motorsport driver in the pit lane during the 15 minute session.
The six-time champion made contact with the GRM Holden while merging into the fast lane.
Following a review, Whincup has been slapped with a penalty which sees him demoted from ninth to 14th on the grid for this afternoon's 39 lap race.
“After a DRD investigation and an admission to a breach of Schedule B2 Articles 6.6 & 6.7 (contact with Car #34 while merging into the fast lane and the floppy at Pit Exit) by Car #88, Jamie Whincup, the Stewards imposed the penalty of the loss of 5 Grid Spots on Car #88, Jamie Whincup, for Race 15,” read a report from the stewards.
Meanwhile, Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport's Alex Davison has avoided any sanctions after stewards deemed ‘he was not predominately to blame' for impeding DJR Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin in a seperate incident.
Race 15 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is scheduled to start at 1615 local time.
