The Northern Territory Government has instigated the biggest shake-up of the popular Darwin event since its inception in 1998.
From next year the three Supercars races will take place on Friday night, Saturday twilight and Sunday afternoon respectively.
Minister for tourism, hospitality and major events Marie-Clare Boothby said the move will “unlock a raft of opportunities for Territorians and visitors to enjoy all we have to offer: sunset markets and hospitality venues, parks and one-of-a-kind events.”
The decision has largely been met with excitement from drivers and commentators, lauding the spectacle that night racing brings.
However, there is also some surprise as a move to night racing at Hidden Valley was announced 10 years ago and subsequently abandoned.
That was due to pushback from local bars, restaurants and clubs, which benefit from event visitors streaming into the city after each race day finishes.

The proposed mix of night, twilight and day racing may well strike a balance between the traditional format and wholesale change.
This year’s event drew a claimed attendance of 40,000 across the three days, the most since 2023.
What do you think? Is night racing the right move for the Darwin Triple Crown?
