Anton De Pasquale during the Darwin Triple Crown.

Kostecki led Tickford Racing’s Cameron Waters by 0.0402s ahead of Matt Payne (Grove Racing), Thomas Randle (Tickford Racing), and Kai Allen (Grove Racing).

Chaz Mostert was the best of the Toyota drivers in sixth for Walkinshaw TWG. However, the same couldn’t be said for his teammate Ryan Wood, who was a high-profile omission from the Top 10 Shootout.

He went off at Turn 5 on his final flying lap and again at Turn 1 after the chequered flag, bemoaning brake dramas.

Matt Stone Racing duo Jack Le Brocq and Zach Bates were standouts for Chevrolet in seventh and ninth respectively.

Between them, Triple Eight’s Broc Feeney was eighth while Blanchard Racing Team driver James Golding rounded out the top 10.

Will Brown’s qualifying torment continued. He narrowly missed out on the Top 10 Shootout in 11th.

“I made a bit of a mistake, but we’re not at the front right now,” said Brown.

“We’re probably around where Broc is, that eighth position car. It’s quite hard out there.

“It is what it is. We were trying to save a set of greens for the shootout.

“We just didn’t get through. At the end of the day, we’ll work hard in the race and try move up again. That’s pretty much all we can do.

“It’s disappointing, that’s for sure.”

Anton De Pasquale had a horror Q1, only qualifying 20th. Teammate David Reynolds just scraped into Q2 and went on to qualify 18th.

That was in stark contrast to Friday’s efforts in cooler conditions when De Pasquale qualified second alongside Kostecki.

De Pasquale said he felt like he was a long way out of the set-up window and had no balance.

Asked what went wrong, he replied “I don’t know.”

“Different tyre today obviously. Where we’ve been trending obviously didn’t like this tyre,” De Pasquale explained.

“Then I think we missed the window with pressures and stuff. We tried some things for the second run and it was no good.

“That’s all right, it’s all part of the learnings. Well have a good race car and try to move forward.”

The Top 10 Shootout gets underway at 12:05pm AEST.
