Payne led an all-Ford top three ahead of Saturday’s Race 2 pole position winner Cameron Waters for Tickford Racing and Triple Eight’s Broc Feeney.
Chaz Mostert was fourth fastest for Walkinshaw TWG in his Toyota ahead of leading Chevrolet steerer Anton De Pasquale in fifth for Team 18.
Will Brown (Triple Eight) was sixth ahead of Brad Jones Racing duo Cameron Hill and Andre Heimgartner, while Matt Stone Racing closed out the top 10 with Jack Le Brocq and Zach Bates.
Saturday Race 2 winner Kai Allen only qualified 12th, just ahead of standout super sub Todd Hazelwood in 13th for Dick Johnson Racing.
“The first leg I just had a bit of a soft (brake) pedal and wasn’t very happy,” said Allen.
“The second leg I didn’t have the speed. I was struggling out there for grip and putting a lot of messy laps together.

“At the end I felt like I executed a lap really well, just didn’t have the speed.”
Hazelwood’s teammate Rylan Gray showed speed in Q1 with the fifth-fastest time but could only manage 15th in Q2.
Q2 was red-flagged mid-session when Heimgartner spun at Turn 1 and lit a grass fire.
Golding was a high-profile omission from Q1 to Q2, only qualifying 20th in the #7 Blanchard Racing Team Mustang.
The Top 10 Shootout starts at 12:00pm AEST.
