Kostecki withdrew from the event on Sunday morning, having required medical attention in the aftermath of the previous day’s race.
The driver is known to have been suffering from a virus throughout race week, which meant he was absent from the Thursday Track to Town festivities.
Kostecki endured the Saturday race in sweltering conditions without a working drink bottle and was subsequently put on a drip by medical staff.
However, it’s understood the reason for his shock Sunday morning decision to withdraw was due to back pain.
It’s unclear what caused that issue or whether it is the subject of ongoing treatment.
Story said in the latest PG and the Doc episode that Kostecki was excused of commercial duties with the team this week while he continues his recovery.

“Looking after Brodie through the course of the weekend was something that was a priority for us,” he said.
“The fact that his drink failed on Saturday only compounded the trouble he was in.
“He was in good shape Saturday night, he had some fluids put in him and bounced back well. But Sunday morning, he was in all sorts of trouble.
“To make that call (was a) super-big deal for us, but we all immediately jumped into ‘OK, how do we make sure he’s alright, let’s get him back to [Brisbane], let’s think about what comes next.”
Story stressed that Kostecki is “focused on going racing again in Townsville”.
“We want to give him time to get himself into tip-top shape, and that’s really what we’ve done,” he added.
“We’ve been able to talk to some of our commercial partners; he had commitments this week that we’ve been able to get him out of for the purposes of focusing on his recovery.”
