Thompson steps closer to Fujitsu title
Andrew Thompson
Andrew Thompson

Andrew Thompson has made the perfect start to this weekend’s Fujitsu V8 Supercars Series title decider by scoring pole position for Race 1.

After clutch and electrical issues left him just fifth fastest in Friday practice, Thompson lapped the Sydney Olympic Park venue in a best time of 1:29.91s in qualifying, to beat Nick Percat by 0.25s.

Chaz Mostert was a further 0.42s adrift in third, having been baulked on his final flyer after recording the fastest time to the end of the second sector.

The Navy-backed FPR pilot’s chances of a second consecutive pole were reduced to zero when a red flag appeared soon after for the stranded Commodore of Marcus Zukanovic.

Daniel Jilesen had jumped to fourth just prior to the final stoppage, while David Russell, Jack Perkins, Andrew Jones, Taz Douglas, Paul Morris and Tim Blanchard rounded out the top 10.

Scott McLaughlin’s best time was good enough for fifth fastest, but was removed for causing an early red flag, leaving the 18-year-old to start from 23rd.

Thompson currently holds a 233 point lead over David Russell in the series standings, with 150 points available to the winner of each of the two races this weekend.
