Former Audi works driver Michèle Mouton has been appointed Manager of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), bringing a wealth of knowledge to the future of the sport.

The Frenchwoman won four WRC events in the early 1980s and finished second overall in the 1982 title chase. Mouton remains the only female driver to win at the WRC level.

She was also behind the establishment of the Race of Champions events that bring together stars of motor sport from across the globe in a stadium-styled match-race event.

In her role as the FIA’s WRC Manager, Mouton will be responsible for the co-ordination of all aspects of the Championship, including but not limited to safety, regulations and the calendar.

She will represent the sport’s governing body on the majority of WRC events, working in close collaboration with the manufacturers, promoters and event organisers. Mouton will also continue to play an important role in the working group responsible for the future development of rallying.

“This is a very exciting and challenging opportunity, especially at a time when President Todt wants to significantly increase the profile of the sport and take it to new heights,” said Mouton.

“I am looking forward to working with all the WRC stakeholders; together I believe we can bring new dynamism to our spectacular sport.”

Behind the wheel Mouton gained respect not only for her driving, but also for her personality and passion.

Her roles in the future development of the WRC, as well as her position as President of the FIA’s Women & Motor Sport Commission, will also ensure she and the members are at the forefront of promoting new talent into the sport.
