V8 Supercars has announced its 2012 calendar at Bathurst this morning.

Sixteen events are listed on the new schedule, including the traditional non-championship Australian Grand Prix meeting.

The calendar announcement confirms that Sandown will take over from Phillip Island as September’s warm-up to the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Phillip Island’s event will switch to May, while the Abu Dhabi meeting makes an even bigger move from February to November in order to coincide with the Formula One race at the Yas Marina circuit.

Conversely, Symmons Plains has been shifted from November to the March 30-April 1 weekend, making it the third event of the season.

The announced calendar includes an additional, yet-to-be confirmed, meeting on the November 9-11 weekend, which will serve as the championship’s penultimate hit-out.

The Fujitsu V8 Supercars has also been announced, with seven rounds again planned.

The second-tier class will return to Winton after a year away, but will not visit Sandown following that event’s move to an endurance format.
