V8 Ute racer Mason Barbera has been taken to hospital with suspected fractured ribs after a heavy crash in the opening race of the weekend at Sandown.
The 17-year-old’s Ford turned hard right into the armco barrier at the end of the back straight after side-to-side contact with Leigh Nicolaou.
The race was stopped due to the accident, which required extensive repairs to the barriers before track action could resume.
V8 Ute organisers have confirmed that Barbera was temporarily knocked out in the initial impact and, after a visit to the medical centre, has been transferred to hospital.
“The 17 year old lost consciousness momentarily after the incident, and has been transferred to the Alfred Hospital for further observation and treatment for suspected fractured ribs,” read a V8 Ute statement.
“Medical teams responded quickly and race officials deemed it a racing incident with no further action to be taken.”
The track repairs saw the opening Carrera Cup race rescheduled until after V8 Supercars qualifying.
