Vettel leads home Red Bull 1-2 in Turkey

Sebastian Vettel extended his points lead by winning in Turkey

Sebastian Vettel has dominated the Turkish Grand Prix to take his third victory of the season.

The 23-year-old German took control of the race from pole position, and carried out a four-stop strategy to extend his championship lead.

Mark Webber made it a one-two for Red Bull Racing – the Australian passing Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari for second place with just seven laps to go.

Webber fell behind Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes off the start, but rectified the situation with an outside move into the Turn 12 hairpin on Lap 5.

Webber had Vettel’s race lead down below three seconds after the first round of pit stops, but struggled for speed in his second stint to fall back into the clutches of Alonso.

Having taken Webber at Turn 12 in the third stint, Alonso fought to keep Webber, who had a tyre advantage left-over from qualifying, behind after the last pitstop – a battle the Spaniard lost for good on Lap 51 of 58.

The two Red Bulls were separated by 8.8s at the flag, with Alonso’s Ferrari a further 1.2s adrift.

Lewis Hamilton took fourth, some 30.1s behind Alonso, after an up-and-down day for the McLaren driver.

Hamilton’s race took an early blow when the Briton made an optimistic outside move on Webber on the opening lap that saw Hamilton drop from fourth to sixth.

The 2008 World Champion scrapped with team-mate Jenson Button on several occasions, but lost time with a sticky right-front wheel in his third pitstop.

Rosberg ended the race fifth, having overhauled a three-stopping Button in the dying laps.

Button’s strategy was hurt when he lost time behind Vitaly Petrov’s Renault and Felipe Massa’s Ferrari during his second stint.

Button held on for sixth, while Nick Heidfeld, Petrov, Sebastien Buemi and Kamui Kobayashi rounded out the top 10.

Buemi and Kobayashi had also made just three stops each – with Buemi overhauled by Petrov on the final lap.

The race featured just two retirements, with Paul di Resta’s Force India stopping on the circuit on Lap 45, and Timo Glock’s Virgin failing to take to the track with gearbox issues.

Vettel now heads the championship standings by 34 points from Hamilton, with Webber a further four points adrift.
