National media reports linking James Warburton with a move back to commercial television are wide of the mark according to the Supercars chief executive.
With Seven West Media embroiled in a crisis involving its chief executive Tim Worner’s affair with former Seven executive assistant Amber Harrison, the company is said to be preparing for a shake-up of its top job.
Names bandied about in a report in The Australian newspaper included former Seven head David Leckie, Nine’s ex COO Simon Kelly and Warburton.
Despite having previous TV experience in positions which have included Seven’s chief sales person and running Network Ten just ahead of his appointment in the Supercars role in 2013, Warburton regarded the latest development as ‘rumours.’
When contacted by Speedcafe.com Warburton’s succinct response was: “Just more gossip.”
Warburton has at least brought stability to the top post with a succession of CEO’s lasting for merely short stints before he replaced David Malone in 2013.
It is not the first time Warburton has been wrongly associated with a possible move from Supercars.
Last year he was immediately put forward as the prime successor in the NRL CEO role after David Smith resigned.
Other reports linking Warburton to moves with Nine and the Southern Cross Austereo network have also proven wide of the mark.
Warburton has endured one of the most challenging times in Supercars’ history from a commercial and technical side.
