Whincup/Dumbrell take commanding Sandown win

Whincup and Dumbrell scored victory in the Sandown 500

Whincup and Dumbrell scored victory in the Sandown 500

Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell have recorded a second consecutive victory in the Wilson Security Sandown 500 on a dominant day for Holden.

The #1 Red Bull Commodore showed the way for the majority of the 161 laps, only briefly losing the lead in the first pitstop cycle.

The Holden Racing Team took out a double-podium with James Courtney/Greg Murphy second and Garth Tander/Warren Luff third.

Tander held out Craig Lowndes in a late battle for the final podium spot, while Scott Pye/Ash Walsh drove Dick Johnson Racing’s #16 Ford to a fine fifth.

The race included a major crash for Lee Holdsworth early in the final stint.

The Erebus driver was able to walk away from a heavily damaged Mercedes after a high-speed impact with the tyre wall at Turn 6.

The Holdsworth Safety Car saw Whincup’s near 12 second lead over Courtney evaporate ahead of a restart with 22 laps remaining.

Although potentially setting up a thrilling finish, the HRT Commodore had to fight its way through three lapped cars after the green flag and never appeared likely to truly challenge.

Behind the top five, Shane van Gisbergen drove his Tekno Holden to sixth despite a power steering fluid leak in the closing stages.

Co-driver Jonathon Webb ran second to Dumbrell for much of the early going before losing crucial pace late in his final stint before handing over to Van Gisbergen.

With co-drivers needing to complete 54 laps all cars, bar the David Reynolds/Dean Canto Ford, started with their part-timer behind the wheel.

A Safety Car to fix the apex cones at Turn 6 on lap 45 ensured the majority of co-drivers battled it out for longer than expected, as they then stayed in the car until able to make it home on just two more stops.

Reynolds and Canto were well in contention for a podium until a drive-through for the car’s rear-wheels spinning during their second driver change put them back in the pack.

A similar infringement also took care of Michael Caruso/Dean Fiore, who vaulted into the top 10 mix as the eventual result of an early first pitstop.

Chaz Mostert salvaged seventh from a trying weekend for Ford Performance Racing, barging Scott McLaughlin’s Volvo out of the way late in the going.

Mostert enjoyed fresher tyres than his rivals at the end after going off-sequence in order to take over from co-driver Paul Morris as early as possible.

McLaughlin and Alex Premat finished eighth despite losing signifiant ground during the pitstops on lap 45, where the Frenchman found himself stuck behind Oliver Gavin, who was in turn waiting for service behind team-mate Tony D’Alberto.

Reynolds finished ninth, ahead of stable-mate Mark Winterbottom, who never truly recovered from a spin by co-driver Steve Owen late in his final stint.

Joining Holdsworth on the retirements list were Jason Bright/Andrew Jones, whose day began with losing a door skin during a hectic opening lap, and ended courtesy of debris from the Mercedes crash.

Taz Douglas and James Moffat earlier saw their race over due to a dry-break fuel filler malfunction that saw the team unable to remove the fuel hose during the #360 Nissan’s maiden pitstop on lap 15.

The results see Whincup extend his championship lead out to 273 points over now second placed man Lowndes.

Winterbottom now sits third, a further four points adrift of the second Red Bull driver.
