Angelo rejoins Kelly Racing for TCR Australia finale

Chelsea Angelo

Chelsea Angelo will return to the TCR Australia grid for the series finale at The Bend Motorsport Park this weekend.

The 23-year-old will rejoin the Kelly Racing squad with which she contested the opening three rounds of the season before the team elected to switch up its driver line-up for events at Queensland Raceway, Winton and Sandown.

Angelo will once again pilot one of Kelly Racing’s Opel Astras, joining the Braeside outfit’s Supercars star Andre Heimgartner, who will pilot the other.

In the nine races that she contested, her best result was a trio of 12th places – one at each of the three circuits raced at this season,  namely Sydney Motorsport Park, Phillip Island, and The Bend.

Angelo is hopeful the drive will help kickstart her TCR Australia career with a view to landing a seat for next season.

“It’s really cool to come back for The Bend,” said Angelo.

“We did the first three rounds, which was cool to be a part of a new, exciting category.

“Since I’ve been out, Andre has taken over and seems to have fixed the problems that the Astras were experiencing. The car should be quick and we’ll have some fun.

“I’ve done a couple of races in the Hyundai Excel class since then too, so I feel that my front wheel drive experience has improved too. Obviously, the TCR cars are a lot more full-on than an Excel, but it has definitely helped me stay sharp.

“Hopefully this is a restart to my TCR career. I’m not sure what is going to happen for 2020, but I want to finish the year off really strong.

“Right now, there’s nothing confirmed, but I’m open to all options.”

The TCR Australia grid will see 10 manufacturers represented with Peugeot and Cupra set to join the fray this weekend.

Action begins with two practice sessions on Friday.

The TCR Australia Series, as well as the all-new S5000 open wheel class, also on the bill, can be seen live on SBS, as well as the Shannons Nationals live stream carried by Speedcafe.com.
