Cameron McConville will quit full-time V8 Supercar racing at the conclusion of this season.
The 35-year-old, driver of the WOW Racing Commodore VE, has decided to hang up his full-time helmet and will concentrate on a new business venture and his media commitments with Channel 10 as its expert Formula 1 commentator.
McConville told the Brad Jones Racing team of his decision last Friday.
“I just decided that with opening a business and my media commitments, one thing in my life had to go,” he told Speedcafe.
“As difficult as it is to give up racing, I had to decide what’s the best for my family for the next five, 10 years, and the decision was made to step back from driving and concentrate on some new challenges.”
McConville has acquired a Jax Quickfit tyre outlet franchise, operating a store in Moorabbin, Victoria. He opened that business today.
While he will officially step away from full-time driving at the conclusion of this season, he said he’s very keen to secure an endurance V8 role and pursue other one-off events.
“I still think I’m not passed my use-by date,” he said.
“Obviously I want to do the enduros. I’d like to do them with a competitive team, as well as do the test days and the co-driver sessions, plus a couple of one-off races in other classes. I’d still love to do some GT racing of some description.”
McConville has made 136 championship starts with his one and only victory coming at the Winton round in 2004 with Garry Rogers Motorsport. He has also finished second at Bathurst twice (1999 and 2009).
