Flamboyant Gold Coast businessman Travers Beynon is not walking away from a potential involvement in Supercars as he plots an expansion into motorsport.
The tobacco tycoon and self-styled ‘playboy’ has told Speedcafe.com that he has not lost a desire to branch out in Australia’s high profile touring car series.
Beynon was first linked with the category after striking a deal with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport to promote his Freechoice tobacco retailing company across both of its cars at the Castrol Edge Townsville 400 last month.
However, the sponsorship arrangement was blocked by Supercars in the lead-up to the event on the grounds of it breaching Australian government advertising legislation where it promoted tobacco sales.
Beynon launched a subsequent legal challenge against the team after LDM reneged on an alleged change of plans to then promote his elaborate ‘Candy Shop Mansion’ in black and gold livery on the cars.
LDM has since confirmed to Speedcafe.com that legal proceedings are still ongoing.
“Getting involved with (Supercars) is not out of the question but we will see what happens,” Beynon told this website.
“I like motorsports in general. V8 Supercars is a good race series here in Australia so maybe (I can get involved) both (Supercars and Australian GT).
“With me anything is possible (in regards to Supercars team ownership).”
Beynon’s penchant for motor racing saw him make his Australian GT race debut in a Mark Griffith-owned Audi R8 at Queensland Raceway last weekend.
Currently in the process of securing his full CAMS competition licence, the former model plans to import a new 2016 specification GT3 car to field in Australian GT next year.
“It (GT racing) certainly is something I want to get involved in,” Beynon told Speedcafe.com.
“First I have got to get better and then we will see what happens.
“We have some plans however I will not disclose everything. Initially the plan is to get better and do some GT racing.
“The Ferrari 488, Lamborghini Huracan and the new Audi R8 are the three cars we are looking at.
“Myself and my general manager are looking at these and we will decide when the time comes.”
