Carpenter fastest in Indy 500 qualifying

Ed Carpenter

Ed Carpenter has clocked the fastest four-lap run during Day 1 of Qualifying for the Indianapolis 500, while Fernando Alonso and Will Power also booked their places in the Fast 9 shootout.

Qualifying was delayed for five hours due to rain at Indianapolis, taking away any option for drivers to make multiple runs, effectively creating a 33-car shootout.

With the order determined by a random draw, Juan Pablo Montoya was the first of the big names, heading out on track second in his Team Penske Chevrolet.

Tony Kanaan, third out in a Chip Ganassi Honda, was first to lap at an average above 230mph (368km/h), before Power went fastest immediately after in his #12 Penske Chevrolet.

Scott Dixon was 10th out and the 2008 Indy 500 winner took over top spot in his Chip Ganassi Honda with a 230.333mph (370.685km/h) average.

Alonso appeared five cars later and completed his first two laps above 230mph before achieving an average of 230.034mph (370.204km/h) in his McLaren/Andretti Honda, ending his run third-fastest at the time.

Defending race winner Alex Rossi slotted into second in his Andretti Honda before his team-mate Takuma Sato set a new benchmark two cars later.

With Hondas provisionally locking out the front row, Ed Carpenter put Chevrolet on top with a 230.468mph (370.902km/h) average.

He and Sato were the only men to lap above 230mph in each of their four laps, as Carpenter’s team-mate JR Hildebrand went fourth on his late run.

Power, meanwhile, will be Penske’s sole representative in the Fast 9, who will now shoot it out for pole position tomorrow.

A crash for Sebastien Bourdais during his qualifying run, which had seen him quickest at the time, has left the Frenchman facing surgery after suffering multiple fractures in the impact.

Sunday’s program begins with Practice 7 from Monday morning AEST at 0200, followed by qualifying for positions 10 to 33 at 0445 and the Fast 9 at 0700.
