Two-time V8 Supercars champions Jamie Whincup and Marcos Ambrose may not compete against one another on the track these days, but the pair are engaged in a neck-and-neck duel in the Castrol EDGE Rankings.
The rankings use a complex mathematical formula to compare drivers from the world's top motorsport categories – with Red Bull Formula One star Sebastian Vettel currently holding a healthy outright lead.
Last weekend saw eight of the top 10 ranked Australians in action, with Whincup moving ahead of Ambrose to become the fourth-highest ranked Australian (69th overall), behind Mark Webber (second overall), Will Power (sixth overall) and Ryan Briscoe (23rd overall).
Webber gained an outright position despite not racing at the weekend, as Citroen World Rally Championship pilot Sebastien Loeb slipped to third thanks to losing out to team-mate Sebastien Ogier in the Acropolis Rally.
Team Penske IndyCar driver Power received a strong points boost by charging from a 17th place starting position to finish fourth in the weekend's race at Milwaukee, with the bonus rankings points for the places gained seeing the Toowoomba native move to within striking distance of fifth overall.
