V8 Supercars star Chaz Mostert’s return to Mount Panorama has netted pole position for Sunday’s Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.
The 23-year-old topped qualifying with a 2:26.87s best aboard the Class B BMW 335i he will share in the inaugural running of the enduro with long-time friend Nathan Morcom.
It will be an all-BMW front-row with the Class A BMW 1M of Tim Leahey/Beric Lynton just 0.2s adrift at the end of the final 15 minute qualifying session for the top 20 cars.
The German marque’s front-row lock-out comes despite the Friday practice pacesetting M135i of Luke Searle/Paul Morris suffering an engine failure this morning.
Although missing the rest of the day’s track action, Searle’s Roadchill Express team says it expects to start the race with a replacement motor sourced from Sydney overnight.
Third on the grid belongs to the Garth Walden/Ben Porter Mercedes AMG A45, which hit the Griffins Bend wall moments after its best lap of the session.
Driven back to the pits with right-side damage, the Mercedes will be repaired in time for tomorrow’s 1200 local time race start.
The Iain Sherrin/Grant Sherrin/David Ayres BMW 135i will start fourth ahead of the Michael Caine/Gerry Murphy Mitsubishi, which headed a five-strong train of Lancers in the top 10.
Mark Eddy and Francois Jouy scored pole in Class C aboard their Renault Megane RS265, while other classes fell to the Toyota 86 GTS of Leigh Burges/Gary Burges/Geoffrey Moran and the Nissan Pulsar of Dimitrios Agathos/James Duckworth.
