Chris Pither has made his own piece of history at this year’s Bathurst 1000, becoming the first V8 Supercars Championship driver to hit the wall.
Driving the #21 Wilson Security Commodore, Pither collected the Griffins Bend tyre wall at the end of Mountain Straight after locking a tyre in the co-driver only session.
While the impact was relatively light, the damage has ruled the car out of the session, which was delayed by 13 minutes while the officials repaired the tyre wall.
Pither, who will partner regular steerer David Wall, said that he was kicking himself for the error.
“I got the left front locked up. I pinched the tyre, and I just couldn’t get it turned,” Pither told Speedcafe.com.
“I tried to get off the brake to steer it, but I just got a big push.

“I didn’t hit the tyres hard, but the tyre wall sucked the car in. It’s pretty disappointing, frustrating, and I’m just kicking myself. I need the laps and this is not the best way to get them.”
The #21 Wilson Security Commodore VE will miss the remainder of Practice 2, but is likely to be ready for the third and final session of the day at 1505.
