Davies takes first career Super2 pole in Townsville

Shae Davies

Shae Davies has landed his first ever Armor All Pole Position in the Dunlop Super2 Series, bouncing back from a lap wrecked by traffic at Townsville.

The MW Motorsport driver will line up for this afternoon’s opening race alongside Todd Hazelwood, while Paul Dumbrell qualified seventh.

Davies was on for a significant improvement to his position, then outside the top 10, in the latter minutes of the session before he came up fast on Josh Kean while crossing Boundary Street.

The 27-year-old was unperturbed as he jumped to the top of the timesheets next time around with a 1:14.8028s in his #28 Loco Nissan Altima.

The pole is his first in the category since joining the second tier of Supercars at the 2014 season finale.

Davies’ time unseated Hazelwood, who ended up over 0.1s away in the #35 Bigmate Matt Stone Racing Commodore.

Garry Jacobson starts third, alongside Anton de Pasquale.

Jacobson moved up to second during the second runs before being shuffled back in the latter half of the session.

He took the #1 Mega Prodrive Racing Australia Falcon to third on the timing monitor in the final minute and improved again after the chequered flag to consolidate the position.

De Pasquale briefly held the lead in the #67 ToolPro Paul Morris Motorsport Falcon before usurping Jack Le Brocq for fourth after the chequered flag.

Le Brocq (#28 GoGetta MW Motorsport Altima) ended up fifth, sharing the third row with Richard Muscat (#44 Wilson Security GRM Commodore).

Dumbrell didn’t seriously threaten for pole as he qualified seventh in the #88 Burson Auto Parts Eggleston Motorsport Commodore, and will start next to Jack Perkins (#4 Titan Tray Dragon Motor Racing Commodore).

Macauley Jones (#14 DrillPro Brad Jones Racing Commodore) qualified ninth, with Kean (#5 Wynns Prodrive Racing Australia Falcon) provisionally 10th.

Kean will, however, face a post-session investigation into the incident with Davies.

The 15-minute session ran full length despite a red flag period just after the first timed laps when Jack Smith (#21 SCT Logistics Brad Jones Racing Commodore) locked up and took out Brodie Kostecki (#57 Sprint Cutting Matt Stone Racing Falcon) at Turn 2, ending both cars’ sessions.

Race 1, of 21 laps distance, starts at 1455 local time/AEST.
