James Davison says he’s looking forward to returning to the Grand-Am Series in the near future despite the Michael Baughman Racing team enduring a difficult run in the Brickyard Grand Prix this weekend.
The 26-year-old Davison received a late call-up to drive alongside Indy Lights Series front-runner Sebastian Saavedra and car owner Michael Baughman in the #46 Corvette for the category’s first outing on Indianapolis’ permanent road course.
Davison would not get to drive in the race however, with Saavedra taking the car from its 28th placed grid position to 11th before a differential failure put the car out at the end of the first hour.
The #2 Starworks Riley-Ford of Sebastien Bourdais and Alex Popow eventually won the three-hour race, which was peppered by heavy showers and nine full-course cautions. The #44 Magnus Racing Porsche of Andy Lally and John Potter took victory in the GT class.
While it was a difficult weekend for Davison, the Australian says he’s hoping to return to the Michael Baughman Racing operation in the future.
“I really enjoyed the short time I had behind the #46 Corvette,” said Davison, who had not driven a competition car since his one-off outing in the Australian Carrera Cup at Albert Park in March.
“There was a lot to learn in the sole 30 minutes of practice Sebastian and I had prior to the race and was pleased to get straight down to a competitive time in five laps.
“While the race wasn’t to be for us, team owner Mike Baughman was pleased with what we achieved and has offered me a ride at further races.
“Exactly which races they’ll be has yet to be decided, but the Daytona 24 hour next January is one of them.”
The 2012 Grand-Am Series continues in two weeks time at Watkins Glen.
