Drouin Speedway starts it’s season this Saturday with the annual Sally Memorial in honour of committee member Paul Walkinshaw’s late wife and one of a couple of big Standard Saloon features Drouin holds each season. Along with the second round of the Gippsland Wingless Sprint series, Speedway Sedans Australia Juniors, and Ladies Standard Saloons will provide this Saturdays action.
Some big entrants in the Standard Saloon ‘Sally Memorial’ include Mitch Foster of Morwell who was Victoria three in the class just two seasons ago, Jeff and Mitch Blencowe, Poowong racers Owen and Harry Cecil, Leigh Gooding, Mark and Andrew Miles, Matt Leek, Warragul racer Kacey Ingram, and Jacob Vuillermin the state champion just two seasons ago.
There is big prize money up for grabs along with the special honour of winning a blue-ribbon race whether you knew Sally Walkinshaw or not, and of course there is the all-important trophy you get that confirms the win in the Memorial on Sally’s day. Andrew Miles is fresh from winning the Stephen Douglas Memorial at Nyora last weekend and any of the drivers mentioned above are likely to be a winner on Saturday.
Round one of the Wingless Sprint Gippsland series took place on Sunday night at Nyora Raceway, however a host of the stars at Nyora on Sunday have not nominated to compete this weekend at Drouin. Thomas McDonald from Koo Wee Rup is possibly the highest placed point scorer at this time with Scott Irons, Aron Lawrence, Ben Hodge, and Ricky Mills of Traralgon also with an opportunity to jump a few of the others that competed at Nyora.
A terrific field of Ladies Standard Saloon entrants have nominated with two times former Victorian champion Ally Morrison hitting the track this weekend. Bree Walker won on Sunday night at Nyora, and she is filled with confidence heading into this Saturday’s racing whilst Caroline Allen, Elisa Halliday, Kate Stuchbery, Bronwyn, and Maddison Miles are all capable of battling for a podium spot if not the race win itself.
Speedway Sedans Victoria Junior racing will see a handful of Top Stars and New Stars compete with Cruz Farrell coming off a great season last year winning a few races up against, his sister Matilda, plus Tyler Smith from Tasmania and Tyson Heaphy. Developing drivers in the New Stars include Stene Cosson, Jaylen Knight, Brad Marshall, Darcy Dannatt and Luke Morrison with Cosson a winner last season and Knight and Marshall regular podium contenders.
Gates open from 9.30am. Racing from 1pm
Entry will cost $20 for an adult, aged and invalid Pensioner and Children 12 to 16yrs is $15 and Children under 12 years of age are free. A family ticket for two adults and two children aged 12 to 16 will cost $50.
