Evans targeting Carrera Cup title in 2018

Jaxon Evans tested the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car at Queensland Raceway

Jaxon Evans is targeting  the Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia series title as he stepped up preparations for the 2018 season.

A breakout season last year saw him become a feature towards the front of the Carrera Cup field, though the Gold Coast-based Kiwi is looking to step that up this year.

“We certainly need to sort of pull our finger out and have a good crack at it this year,” Evans told Speedcafe.com.

“We’ve certainly worked our way up to the position we’re in now, so that’s definitely my main aim.”

Evans has remained with McElrea Racing for the coming year, having been earmarked by the team as a successor to the team’s most famous alumnus, Matt Campbell.

The 22-year-old today sampled the brand-new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car he’ll pilot throughout the season.

“It’s certainly a little step up from last year’s car,” he admitted.

“The base feel of everything is much the same it still feels like a Porsche when you get behind the wheel but that extra bit of power is certainly something that’s going to take a little bit to get used to but we’re slowly getting our heads around it.”

According to Evans, the biggest difference will come late in a race weekend, where the additional power could leave drivers struggling for grip.

“I think there will be a little bit of tyre saving, or tyre management within, the team and everyone else. It’ll be interesting come the last race on Sunday afternoon,” he reasoned.

“We get allocated eight race tyres for each weekend, but even last year that was for me a little bit of a struggle towards the end of the weekend and I think having that extra power is only going to make it a little bit harder.”

The eight-round Carrera Cup season kicks off at the Adelaide 500 on March 1-4.
