Formula 1 heads to the Red Bull Ring this weekend for the Austrian Grand Prix, with the Spielberg venue preparing to host the 39th running of the event.
Set in the Styrian mountains, the 4.326km circuit remains one of the shortest laps on the F1 calendar, but its blend of long straights, heavy braking zones and sweeping high-speed corners has made it a regular source of close racing since returning to the schedule in 2014.
This year marks the latest chapter in the race’s long association with the same venue, having previously been known as the Osterreichring and the A1-Ring before its current Red Bull Ring era began after an 11-year absence from the calendar.
While Austria has become a familiar stop again over the past decade, recent history has largely been dominated by Mercedes and Red Bull, with only two of the 12 races held at the circuit since 2014 not being won by either team.
One of those came last year, when Lando Norris delivered victory for McLaren, leaving the Woking squad hoping a return to Spielberg can help it finally break through for its first win of the 2026 season.
Ferrari is the only other team outside Red Bull and Mercedes to win in Austria since the race returned, with Charles Leclerc taking victory in 2022. Leclerc arrives this weekend looking to build on Ferrari’s recent momentum as he chases his first win since the 2024 United States Grand Prix in Austin.

His teammate Lewis Hamilton also arrives in strong form, having finally claimed his first victory for Ferrari last time out in Barcelona. The result moved Hamilton to within 41 points of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, whose streak of five consecutive wins came to an end with retirement in Spain.
Hamilton, however, is still chasing a first Austrian Grand Prix victory, with the Red Bull Ring one of the rare circuits on the calendar where the seven-time world champion has never stood on the top step.
The circuit is also a home race for Red Bull, with the team’s parent company owning the venue. All four of Red Bull’s wins at the track have come through Max Verstappen, who holds the record for the most victories around the Spielberg circuit.
George Russell will also be looking to force his way back into the championship fight at a venue where he has previously tasted success, having won the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix for Mercedes.
With four different winners across the last four editions of the race, Austria once again shapes as a crucial weekend in the championship fight with plenty at stake.
