Formula 1 heads to Silverstone this weekend for the British Grand Prix, with the historic venue preparing to host another chapter in one of the sport’s most famous races.
The 5.891km circuit remains one of the great tests on the calendar, combining sweeping high-speed sections such as Copse, Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel with long straights and heavy braking zones that have helped make it a regular source of exciting racing.
Silverstone holds a unique place in Formula 1 history, having hosted the first ever world championship race in 1950, which was won by Giuseppe Farina for Alfa Romeo before the Italian went on to become the sport’s first world champion later that year.
The British Grand Prix has also been part of every F1 world championship season since 1950, with Silverstone hosting the race 59 times, including every year since 1987.
This year’s race is set to carry extra energy for the home crowd, with five British drivers on the grid and three of them having won races since the last British Grand Prix, and the return of the sprint also adding extra excitement.
Lando Norris returns to Silverstone as both the defending British Grand Prix winner and reigning world champion, making it his first home race since claiming the title last year.
George Russell also arrives with renewed momentum after winning in Austria last weekend, a result that moved him back into second in the drivers’ championship, while former Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton sits third after winning the previous round in Barcelona.
Hamilton has long enjoyed a remarkable relationship with Silverstone and holds the record for the most British Grand Prix victories, having won his home race nine times, while Fernando Alonso is the only other multiple winner on the current grid, although the last of his two victories came back in 2011.
Kimi Antonelli remains the driver they are all chasing, with the championship leader still 40 points clear of Russell heading into the weekend as he looks to return to the top step after missing out in Austria. V
ictory for Antonelli would make him the first Italian to win the British Grand Prix since Alberto Ascari in 1953, with Ascari and Farina still the only Italians to have won the race.
Nico Hulkenberg also returns to the scene of his breakthrough podium from 12 months ago, though the Sauber driver would likely settle for a points finish this weekend. Hulkenberg, both Cadillac drivers and Lance Stroll are the only drivers yet to score this season, leaving Silverstone as another opportunity to get off the mark.
With British interest high, a sprint race to look forward to, a packed home crowd expected and the championship fight continuing to tighten, Silverstone once again shapes as one of the biggest weekends of the season.
