Speaking on the Sky Sports broadcast in front of the Racing Bulls garage, Martin Brundle said he had spoken with Lawson, who told him it was unlikely he would make the race.
“I might have some breaking news. He’s not going to make the race,” Brundle said on the broadcast.
“I was just talking to him. He said best-case scenario, he starts from the pit lane. The car’s got some gremlins. He was just telling me.
“Presumably it’s in bits, still up on the jacks. What a shame after such a mega qualifying.”
Cameras showed the car still in pieces, with Racing Bulls mechanics working on it as a forlorn Lawson looked on.
However, the issue appears to have been resolved, with the car reassembled and Lawson emerging from the pits for his installation lap, thanking his team over the radio for fixing the problem.
“Well done everyone, very, very good job. I will try my best today to make it worth it,” he said.
Lawson produced an impressive qualifying performance on Saturday, securing his best grid position since the Australian Grand Prix and earning 10th place on the grid.
The Monaco Grand Prix starts at 11pm AEST.
