Nick Foster has not given up hope of winning this year’s Australian Formula Ford Championship despite a fast start to the season by chief rival Cam Waters.
After three rounds Waters sits 42 points ahead of Foster in the series standings, but Foster says that his Sonic Motor Racing team-mate is still in his sights.
“It hasn’t been an ideal start to season for us,” said Foster.
“I expected a lot better start to the year and it definitely could have been better, but we’ve had our share of issues, errors and bad luck.
“Even through we’ve proved our pace at each round, but we haven’t put a complete weekend together yet by any means.”
Both Waters and Foster scored their first wins for the season at the Eastern Creek round last weekend, held in conjunction with a Shannons Nationals event for the first time.
“It was good to get a race win at Eastern Creek there at the end. We’re at where we are at so we move on,” said Foster.
“I’m obviously not giving up. We’re not even at the halfway point in the championship. His (Waters) lead is big but no unreasonable – one bad round for him and we’re back in it.
“The pressure is on him so we’ve just got to do our own thing and get both the pace and consistency going in the Steeline car.”
Five of the eight rounds in this year’s championship still lie ahead, with the next round of the championship at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich supporting the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 on August 19-21.
Foster and Waters are also both a chance to make their V8 Supercars Championship debut this October at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 as contestants on ‘Shannons Supercar Showdown’.
The first episode of the reality TV show, which sees a winner selected from 10 young hopefuls to drive alongside Grant Denyer at Bathurst, airs this Sunday on 7mate at 5pm.
Foster says that being involved in the TV show has been an eye-opening experience.
“Some of the filming has felt a bit like being on Big Brother,” said Foster.
“I’ve done a lot of different things but this one has been completely different and very new to me and all the other guys.
“In Formula Ford you do TV things for the telecast and other things here and there, but never anything on the scale of this TV show.
“I’m really looking forward to the first episode going to air and seeing how it comes across.”
