Foster takes Carrera Cup points lead

Foster held of Campbell in the second race

Nick Foster has won the second race of the Carrera Cup at Sandown and in the process grabbed a slender points lead over defending champion Steve Richards.

Foster led from the green light to beat a shadowing Matt Campbell, while all eyes were on Richards’ drive from the rear.

After a DNF in the opening race after clashing with Shae Davies, Richards stormed from 17th on the grid to climb all the way to seventh at the finish.

The points gap in the championship now sitting at just 0.5 with seven races still to run in the season, including tomorrow’s final race at Sandown.

With Richards, Craig Baird, Davies and John Martin all starting off the rear, it made for plenty of great racing as the full-time professionals made their way forward.

There was plenty of paint swapped, with Baird at one stage sent across the grass after battling Martin.

In the middle was the Tag Heuer Carrera Challenge runners with Tony Bates coming home in first ahead of Stephen Grove and Shane Smollen.

Tomorrow’s final Carrera Cup race set down as the curtain-raiser to the Sandown 500 at 12.10pm.
