James Davison will be back behind the wheel of Dale Coyne Racing's #18 entry for this weekend's round of the IndyCar Series at Sonoma.
The 26-year-old impressed the team on debut at Mid-Ohio earlier this month, finishing a solid 15th.
Although Coyne's rotating driver roster long had a vaccancy for Sonoma, Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa completed testing duties for the team at the Californian circuit last week and had been favoured to take the drive.
Davison's duties will begin with taking part in the pre-event test at the venue on Wednesday.
“I'm excited to be back in the #18 car at Sonoma,” said Davison, having only received notice from the team on Tuesday.
“Mid Ohio was a solid debut that I came out of pleased and having learnt a lot.
“With some experience now under my belt and added confidence that goes with it, I must aim to go another step forward this weekend.
“Finishing the race again will be most important.”
Davison will join Will Power and the returning Ryan Briscoe as the third Australian on the grid.
The cousin of V8 Supercars stars Will and Alex Davison has endured a tough road to the IndyCar Series, fighting on without a full-time drive since finishing second in the 2010 Indy Lights Series.
