Jamie Whincup wins tyre battle in Race 11

Whincup leads Bright and Winterbottom to the line

Whincup leads Bright and Winterbottom to the line

Jamie Whincup has backed up team-mate Craig Lowndes’ Saturday success with another victory for Red Bull Racing Australia in Race 11 at Barbagallo.

As expected, all of the front-runners pitted for new tyres during the 100km journey, with only Dean Fiore, Alexandre Premat and Scott Pye attempting to hold on without a stop.

That strategy saw Fiore lead the race until Whincup swept through with just seven laps remaining.

Whincup had run third behind Will Davison and Fabian Coulthard in the early stages before jumping to the front by being among the first to pit.

He then held Winterbottom – who also gained by pitting with Whincup – narrowly at bay for much of the race as the Red Bull Holden and Pepsi Max Ford proved evenly matched.

Jason Bright eventually took second from Winterbottom with just two laps remaining however.

Drive all day with open pit lane access at Queensland Raceway: July 1st and 7th. Custom race cars only, low numbers, medical support, garages, and complete on-site facilities.

The Team BOC Holden had dropped from pole to fourth with a poor start, but pitting six laps after Whincup and Winterbottom ensured Bright enjoyed a tyre advantage in the closing laps. He was just 0.75s short of Whincup at the flag.

Winterbottom finished third ahead of Coulthard, Will Davison, James Courtney, Shane van Gisbergen, Craig Lowndes, Alex Davison and James Moffat.

Lowndes’ chances were hindered by having to take to the grass to avoid Bright at the start – dropping the Red Bull Holden from third to eighth. A slow pitstop also hurt the Saturday winner’s cause.

Fiore eventually fell to 13th, while fellow non-stoppers Premat and Pye were 19th and 27th respectively.

Four of the race’s first five laps were run under Safety Car conditions after Lee Holdsworth and David Wall tangled on the opening tour – dispatching the Mercedes into the Turn 6 sand trap.

A second 100km race will complete the Chill Perth 360 this afternoon.
