Jamie Whincup’s father David Whincup has passed away following a short battle with cancer.
First diagnosed with lymphoma cancer last December, David fell ill following chemotherapy treatment. He passed away on Sunday.
David was a keen follower of his son’s racing and was a regular in the V8 Supercars paddock.
Still reeling from his family’s loss, TeamVodafone’s champion driver paid a public tribute to the man he called his “best mate” via an official statement.
“Last week was without a doubt the toughest week of my life,” Whincup said.
“To my sister and me, he was the best Dad in the world. He was my best mate. I would call every second day for a chat or advice and he was someone I chose to spend my holidays with every year since I was born.
“Dad rode the motorsport wave with me every step of the way, which I plan to still be the case right into the future.
“It has been an incredibly hard week for me and my family and I thank everyone for their support so far.
“Dad will never be forgotten. He will be my inspiration as I concentrate on the start of my title defence at Clipsal this weekend.”
Jamie Whincup is the defending V8 Supercars champion, having picked up his third crown in four years last season. He is also a three-time Bathurst 1000 and four-time Clipsal 500 Adelaide winner.
Whincup will be back in action alongside all of the V8 Supercars drivers in the opening event of this year’s championship in Adelaide this weekend.
