Last corner pass gives Jacobson Formula Ford round win

A stunning last corner move has given Garry Jacobson the overall round victory in the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Sandown Raceway today.

With Jacobson, Le Brocq and Davies trading places throughout the 12 lap decider, the finishing order wasn’t finalised until the very last corner when Jacobson successfully dived up the inside of Le Brocq.

Subsequent contact between Le Brocq and Davies saw the pair settle for second and third respectively at the chequered flag.

The round win is Jacobson’s second for the season, and is the perfect rebound after scoring zero points at the crash-marred Townsville round.

All three races over the weekend ran cleanly, with incredibly close racing at the head of the field the norm.

Championship leader Jack Le Brocq won Race 2 earlier today, but Jacobsen’s Race 3 win gave him the round win and a renewed confidence heading into the final two rounds.

“I’m so proud of the whole Sonic team, they made the car so good this weekend,” Jacobson said.

“Everyone is absolutely buzzing with the result, it couldn’t have come at a better time, especially with the next round coming up at Bathurst.”

Davies had a ringside seat for the battle in Races 2 and 3, and was pleased to lift his season podium finish tally to seven.

“I had a great view of the finish, it didn’t quite go to plan, but I’m still very happy with the weekend,” Davies said.

“I just didn’t quite have enough to get amongst Garry and Jack, but it was very close.”

In the title chase, Mathew Hart lost ground on leader Le Brocq after failing to finish the final race after contact in the early laps sidelining the Canberra-based driver.

Despite the failure to the finish, Hart was still classified fourth for the weekend, ahead of top rookie performer Anton De Pasquale, Trent Harrison, Macauley Jones, Sam Power, Simon Hodge and David Sera rounding out the top 10.

With six races and a maximum of 122 points still available, Le Brocq holds down a 50 point advantage over Hart, with Jacobson a further 14 points back in third.

The Rookie of the Year title is likely to go down the wire, with Jones edging ahead of Power by only two points.

The penultimate round of the AFFC is scheduled for October 4-7, at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
