Ingall won the 1990 Motorcraft Formula Ford Driver to Europe Series aboard this brightly coloured Van Diemen RF90.

It was a pivotal year for the South Australian, who had finished runner-up to Mark Larkham in the 1989 season.

Ingall received the new – and somewhat radically styled – car for 1990 through his association with Van Diemen and picked up ex-Larkham backer Coffey Ford.

The combination of Ingall and the RF90 dominated the series, winning four of the seven rounds to score the title over Paul Stokell, Paul Morris and John Blanchard.

Ingall subsequently took the car to England for the Formula Ford Festival, where an impressive run netted a factory drive in the British championship the following year.

He went on to win the British title in 1993 but, after stints in a variety of open-wheel classes across Europe and Japan, eventually returned to Australia and began a V8 career.

Ingall’s RF90 meanwhile became Queenslander Steve Ellery’s first race car and has in recent decades been owned by Lakeside Raceway proprietor John Tetley.

Recently sold to a private collector, the car has been retrieved from Tetley’s Lakeside museum and delivered to its new owner.

The collector plans to undertake a mechanical restoration on the car and display it at the National Motor Racing Museum at Bathurst.

Formula Ford has played a major role in developing local motorsport talent for over 50 years, with cars raced by legends such as Ingall becoming increasingly collectible.
