Erebus tackles rookie test amid Bathurst 1000 target

The team is undergoing a rookie test with Cooper Murray, who as a second-year driver is allocated a single rookie day for the season.

First-year teammate Jobe Stewart has two rookie days at his disposal. He ran at The Bend in February and will test again at the South Australian venue next month.

Murray has Enduro Cup co-driver Lochie Dalton with him at Winton as the team builds towards Bathurst.

“I think we’ll peak at the right time,” Erebus CEO Barry Ryan told Speedcafe following the Townsville 500.

“We always try and peak around Bathurst and we’ve got a couple of rookie test days to try and keep working on things.

“I think we’re going alright. It’s encouraging.”

Erebus has struggled this year as it attempts to rebuild with a pair of inexperienced drivers.

It joined GM’s data sharing alliance ahead of Darwin, which Ryan said provides a “sanity check” but is not a shortcut to competitiveness.

Ryan called on its young drivers to lift and noted their futures with the team will depend on results.

Team owner Betty Klimenko has kept a low profile in recent times but took to social media today, declaring intentions to be at Bathurst and weighing in on Erebus’ fortunes.

“It is hard to sit back and let the rookies do what rookies do. It’s not easy going from the top to the bottom, especially for the crew,” she wrote.

“But we made a commitment to help a couple of young drivers show what they can do over a two year period, and teach them how to navigate the trials of Supercars, and that is exactly what we are doing.

“[It’s] much harder than having a seasoned driver, but if we expect new blood in our sport, we as team owners need to sometimes swallow our pride and pass on knowledge to the young ones coming through.”

Murray led the way for the team in Townsville with 13th place finishes in the Friday and Saturday races.

Erebus had a quiet 2025 season before storming into contention at Bathurst, where Murray led the race with five laps remaining before contact with then-PremiAir Racing driver James Golding.

Klimenko’s team won the Great Race in 2017 with David Reynolds/Luke Youlden and again in 2024 with Brodie Kostecki/Todd Hazelwood.

Erebus is on track at Winton alongside a number of Super2 teams as both series prepare for the Perth Super440 on July 31-August 2.
