The second-generation rally driver will pilot a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 with primary backing from Sydney-based global tech company SafetyCulture, which was founded by fellow ARC driver Luke Anear.
Bates, who will be joined in Portugal by regular co-driver Anthony McLoughlin, said, “I can’t wait to get to Portugal.
“From what I’ve seen, it’s always an incredibly tough event, but I’m excited to tackle it and see what we can achieve.
“I’ve been dreaming about this opportunity for a while, so it feels a bit surreal to finally get the chance.
“Of course, it wouldn’t be possible without the help of sponsors like SafetyCulture and I’m incredibly grateful for their support.”
The deal follows SafetyCulture’s entry into the world of NASCAR through Shane van Gisbergen, initially by way of a personal deal before backing his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet last time out at Phoenix.
It is already established in WRC, though, as a sponsor of the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team, and Bates tested one of that squad’s Rally1 cars in late-2023.
Anear, SafetyCulture’s CEO, said, “Lewis is an incredible Aussie talent, so we’re really proud to be backing him.
“He’s a team player and one of the hardest workers in rallying, which aligns nicely with what we’re all about as a company.”
Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia, which backs Bates at home, is also supporting his WRC2 tilt.
Rally de Portugal, based in Matosinhos, inland from Portugal, takes place on May 9-12.
