Tim Macrow will shoot for a third Australian Formula 3 title this season, driving for Dennie Rumble’s Alpine Motorsports.

The 2007 and 2013 champion is set to pilot the team’s Dallara F307 in the full seven round series, which kicks off at Sandown on April 1-3.

Macrow made a one-off appearance in the car at Phillip Island last year, scoring pole position and winning all three races.

The 33-year-old is expected to start the season as favourite for the title, despite the ongoing presence of newer F311 model Dallaras in the field.

Others currently confirmed for the series include last year’s Bathurst round winner Chris Anthony, who will be joined at Gilmour Racing by newcomer Cameron Shields.

“I’ve got a pretty good record in older cars, and the car was fast at Phillip Island. I see no reason why we can’t challenge for the title,” said Macrow.

“There’s still plenty of desire to drive these cars fast and win races, and I have no doubt I can do that.”

Rumble says he hopes the confirmation of Macrow encourages others to sign up for Formula 3, which continues as a CAMS series after losing its championship status.

“We saw what the car could do at Phillip Island last year, and we know Tim is as dependable as the Bank of England with the car,” Rumble said.

“We’ve now given young drivers with an opportunity to benchmark themselves against one of the best drivers in the history of the F3 category.

“The challenge is now set for Australia’s best open-wheel talent to come and race us.”

Macrow is also competing in this year’s Australian GT Championship, sharing a Ferrari 430 with Brenton Griguol.
