The memory of former Novacastrian racer Stewart McColl has been recognised at the Newcastle street circuit with the unveiling of a plaque.
Located on the starter’s rostrum, Supercars drivers Jamie Whincup and Will Davison helped unveil the plaque which was organised by the pair, with the help of Paul Dumbrell and Aaron Noonan.
A promising racer, McColl competed in Formula Ford, Formula Holden and Procar before losing his life during an event at Phillip Island in 2003.
In his memory, a plaque was unveiled on the starter’s rostrum, with a group of family and friends there to witness the occasion.
“Very fitting,” said Whincup after the unveiling.
“He was a born and bred, proud Newcastle racer. A great friend of ours who lost his life doing what he does best.
“It’s fantastic to be able to honour him after all these years.”
The Coates Hire Newcastle 500 gets underway tomorrow with opening Virgin Australian Supercars practice commencing at 1210.
