The battling Scott Pye and Paul Morris Commodore rolled the dice with spare parts shortage before claiming a surprise sixth place in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
The bolters of the field in the freshly liveried Sargent Security #80 Commodore emerged as surprise runners among the leaders in The Great Race.
Veteran driver Morris disclosed that the Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport-prepared Holden did not have the luxury of spare parts.
“There were no spares,” Morris told Speedcafe.com
“What’s on the cars is all we got. I told the boys to just chill in morning warm-up.
“All the parts that we had were on the car. We would be bolting shit back on the car if we crashed into the fence.
“Scott (Pye) did a really good job and listened to me well.
“We just came here Thursday and we just stuck to our plan and just raced ourselves. I said to Scott, “come here and do exactly as I say and I will guarantee you will finish in the top 10.”
Lucas Dumbrell found reason to crack a smile after a turbulent year potted with significant crashes.
“It means a great deal to me,” Dumbrell said.
“Just finishing Bathurst fourth year in (for his team), it’s a huge congratulations and reward to the guys who all work so hard day in, day out.”
Pye echoed the sentiments of Morris believing the top 10 finish for the #80 car was always on the cards.
“For us, it wasn’t a surprise,” said Pye.
“We’ve had so much bad luck.
“This weekend, though, the car was pretty much faultless.”
