Chaz Mostert helped FIST Team AAI Motorsports to victory in the GT class of the Asian Le Mans Series after an impressive debut drive at the Zhuhai International Circuit.
The Prodrive Racing Australia Supercars driver quick adapted to the Chinese circuit and GT racing as he joined Finn Jesse Krohn and Junsan Chen (Chinese Taipei) behind the wheel of the team’s #91 BMW M6 GT3 for the season opener.
Mostert proved key in the victory as he managed to halve an 80 second lead to the team’s class leading Mercedes AMG GT3 of former GP2 (Formula 2) star Rafaelle Marciello, Ollie Milroy and Lam Yu.
The Pirtek Enduro Cup winner was up against Bronze rated driver Yu for the stint having taken over from Chen.
The entry held second for much of the four hour race after Krohn qualified second in class behind Rafaelle Marciello.
Brakes proved to be a deciding factor in the race due to Zhuhai’s notorious heavy braking zones.
The lead Mercedes struggled allowing Mostert to home in on the leader before handing over to Krohn for the final stint, who took the lead in the final hour.
The Finn went on to build a 22.214s margin to take the victory.
Mostert, in only his second GT race, is likely to make further outings in the four-round Asian Le Mans Series.
He will rejoin the team following this weekend’s ITM Auckland Super Sprint for the prestigious FIA GT World Cup at Macau from November 16-19.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Josh Burdon produced an impressive stint to help KCMG to victory in the LMP3 class alongside Louis Prette and Neric Wei.
Jackie Chan DC Racing took our the outright honours courtesy of its Oreca 05 Nissan LMP2 driven by Thomas Laurent, Stephane Richelmi and Harrison Newey.
The Algarve Pro Racing LMP2 of Australian Dean Koutsoumidis was fifth while the sister Jackie Chan DC Racing LMP2 entry featuring Australian-based Brit James Winslow retired after 41 laps.
The Asian Le Mans Series heads to Fuji, Japan from December 1-3.
