Racing for Prema Racing, Wharton became the first Australian driver to win a race in the Formula Regional European Championship and only the 12th driver to do so since the championship’s inception.
After he went from 11th to seventh in the first race, Wharton an excellent start in the second race. He passed the polesitter in the early stages and stayed in front through to the chequered flag.
“I managed a good start and overtook Brando at the first corner. From that point, I aimed to control the race and manage the tyres,” Wharton said.
“It wasn’t easy, but we did a great job. I’ve made some mistakes in the early part of the season, and now we restart from this success to look ahead to the rest of the year.”
At the same meeting in the Italian Formula 4 Championship, US Racing’s Jack Beeton scored two second place finishes from three starts.
Beeton grabbed the lead on the first lap of Race 1 and led until the penultimate lap where he lost out to the series leader Freddie Slater.
“I made a small mistake, and that was it. Racing at such a high level, you can’t afford to make any mistakes, you have to be perfect all race,” Beeton admitted.
After a 13th in Race 2 he grabbed second after just a couple of corners and held position throughout in the final race. Prade finished the weekend with an eighth and a 17th and Mrad posted a 22nd and 20th.
At Zandvoort, Patrick Heuzenroeder picked up his first top three in the GB3 Championship, racing for JHR Developments. The result came after a 19th and a fifth. Meanwhile Flynn Jackes who races for Chris Dittmann Racing, finished just out of the top 10 in Race 1 with 12th and followed with an 11th and a 15th.
Eurocup-3 were at the same meeting and Noah Lisle had an 11th, fifth and 20th in the Campos Racing entry.
British Formula 4 was also on the program and Alex Ninovic continued his solid season. Racing for Rodin Motorsport, he sits second in the championship after a second, a win and an 18th over the weekend. Meanwhile Xcel Motorsport’s Zack Scoular started off with a 19th and then finished 10th in Race 2 before a retirement in the last.
