The Trackhouse Racing driver left Naval Base Coronado on 362 points after crashing out less than halfway through.
The result has had massive implications on the Chase, demoting van Gisbergen three places down the pylon to 17th in the standings and one place below the cut-off line.
Legacy Motor Club driver Erik Jones and Austin Cindric for Team Penske each gained one place to 14th and 15th respectively with finishes of 20th and 22nd respectively.
The biggest mover, however, was RFK Racing’s Ryan Preece who scored three stage points en route to 11th to move into the coveted final spot in the Chase.
At the top of the order, Tyler Reddick’s lead continues to whittle down.
The 23XI Racing driver led in the closing laps in San Diego until he was overtaken by eventual race winner and teammate Corey Heim.

Reddick then suffered a puncture and finished 25th following his unscheduled pit stop to collect just 12 points.
Just eight points split Reddick and fellow Toyota driver Denny Hamlin, who has been on a recent hot streak for Joe Gibbs Racing.
Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney remains third on 583 points, putting him 133 points in arrears of the lead.
