Penalty sees Randle lose CAMS F4 win

Thomas Randle

Thomas Randle

Thomas Randle has been stripped of his victory in Race 2 of the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship at Townsville after being issued with a post race time penalty.

The Dream Motorsport driver was penalised for his involvement in an incident which forced race leader Jimmy Vernon into an early retirement.

Randle was trying to protect his second spot from Jordan Lloyd when he clipped the rear of long time leader Vernon, which pitched him into a spin.

The incident prompted an early finish to the race with Randle taking the chequered flag.

However, stewards issued Randle with a 30 second time penalty dropping him to ninth, handing the win to Lloyd.

As result of the penalty, Nicholas Rowe has been promoted to second with Team BRM’s Harry Hayek awarded the final spot on the podium.

“It’s always better to win on track instead of it coming down to these stewards hearings but a victory is a victory as far as I am concerned,”said Lloyd.

“The last thing we were expecting was to win the race from practically last. Our outright speed is there, the car is good, so we are happy.”

The CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship will return to action on Sunday for Race 3, which is scheduled to begin at 10:00.
