This weekend will see Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge chalk up the 200th race in the category’s history at Queensland Raceway.
A feeder series for Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, the series was founded in 2008, with 67 different race meetings having taken place over the intervening years.
The series has been the starting point for the likes of Matt Campbell and Jaxon Evans, both of whom progressed into the ranks of the Porsche Junior Driver program.
“GT3 Cup Challenge started as there was a need for drivers at the time – who didn’t want to race in the Australian GT Championship – to establish their own category as many of the Porsches were already eligible, as well as others that could be accommodated within the class under the technical regulations,” added Jodi Zylstra, who helped set up the series together with Sven Burchartz and John Trend.
“I’m really proud to see how the category has evolved and flourished over last years,” added Burchartz, who was also the series’ inaugural champion.
“It’s found its true home now, as an integral step within the Porsche Motorsport pyramid.”
The hallmark 200th race takes place in Race 2 on Saturday at Queensland Raceway, which is hosting the fourth round of the Shannons Nationals.
A 19 car field is set to compete, with the series currently led by Harri Jones, who holds a 58 point lead over Max Vidau and Aaron Love, the Sonic Motor Racing team-mates tied for second position in the title standings.
