Porsche has for the first time revealed images of its compact V4 cylinder turbo hybrid motor which propelled it to a 17th outright Le Mans 24 Hour victory last year.
The engine, exhaust recovery system and state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery that sends energy to the front axle saw the Porsche 919 Hybrids secure a one-two finish at Le Mans and supply the Zuffenhausen maker with the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in the World Endurance Championship.
Widely acknowledged as the most technologically advanced competition car ever built, the 2-litre V4 cylinder built to the new-for-2016 regulations sees the 919s drop from over 1000bhp to around 900bhp from its combined combustion and electrical (brake energy energy systems).
Along with winning the WEC and Le Mans in only its second year of campaigning the 919s, Porsche was unbeaten in qualifying for all eight rounds last year.
The new WEC year will see the traditional Prologue held at Paul Ricard in the south of France from March 25-26 ahead of the season opening Silverstone 6 Hours on April 17.
The addition of the Mexico City race at the Formula 1 venue on September 4 means the calendar has been expanded to nine rounds.
